Upload Utility allows engineers to upload information that describes hard copy and electronic documents to the Knowledge Center (KC). If the information relates to an electronic file, the file itself can also be uploaded. The data is stored in two separate directories. The descriptions (the document meta data) are saved to a summary directory, formatted as HTML documents. Uploaded files are stored in a document directory.

Each HTML summary document contains a link to its corresponding uploaded document. The summaries themselves are suitable for inclusion in a KC searchable collection. As a result, a user could easily search the collection, retrieve the summaries and display the associated upload documents. A separate servlet is provided that produces an HTML table that summarizes all of the summary documents. Each row of the table contains a link to the primary document. Currently, no mechanism has been provided for viewing individual summary documents.

This implementation was developed as a proof of concept. It provides the building blocks for a full database implementation that would allow user friendly management of the upload collection.
